Although a wide variety of fishing flies come readymade, many anglers prefer to handcraft their own. The bucktail streamer is a good place for beginners to start developing their skills with building artificial lures. Beyond the standard hook, the needed materials for this fly include a bucktail, thread, and cement, all available at most outdoor sporting retailers.
Start by securing the hook in a vise and then wrap a small section of the hook shank with thread, moving from the eye downward. With the thread evenly in place, next remove a small piece of hair from the bucktail, dab it with a small amount of cement, and fasten it to the hook. Complete the fly by wrapping additional thread around the hook eye and bucktail.
